This is the only time of the year when it’s almost certain not to rain. In November, there are short rains that sometimes last into December, January, and March. In April and May, there are long rains.

But things can be a little different on Mafia Island… Mafia Island doesn’t have the best beaches and can have a lot of mangroves, so most people don’t come to rest and enjoy the sun. Instead, they come to experience some of the best diving in the world and to see the powerful Whale Sharks. Usually, whale shark season lasts from October to March, so if this is your main concern, don’t worry too much about the rain.

But if you want to visit both Mafia and Zanzibar at the same time, February is the best month to do it because it rains a lot less than the other months. October is also similar, but if you want to see whale sharks, February is better because it’s peak season. If you want to avoid rain and get the most out of your diving experience, we recommend February over October.
