Best places to stay on Safari in the Selous Game Reserve
Best places to stay on Safari in the Selous Game Reserve. The Selous Game Reserve has some of the best places to stay while on safari. People are drawn to the Selous because it has a really wild natural atmosphere, beautiful, varied scenery, and the option for a more exciting safari experience by boating, walking, and fishing. Like Ruaha, this Tanzanian park in the south lets you have a very personal safari experience for less money than the Serengeti. The well-known Serengeti gets a lot more tourists, which makes Selous a more peaceful and real safari experience.
It takes longer to find the game in Selous because it is so big—about the same size as Switzerland. In the Ngorongoro Crater, you can see all five of the “Big 5” in an hour. Here, you won’t be able to do that, but the sightings and encounters are much more gratifying, and groups are usually kept to a minimum. It is one of the few places left where the critically threatened African wild dog can still live. There are thought to be about 4,560 of them in the park. Selous is home to many elephants, buffalo, lions, and wild dogs. It is also home to more than 450 different bird types.
There are a lot of places to stay in the Selous that are close to a constant water source. These could be on the Rufiji River or one of the many beautiful lakes that surround the park. Because the water sources are so close, things like boating safaris and fishing are easy to do. There are different types of camps inside the hotels.
Some are simple safari camps with a rustic feel, while others are so luxurious they would beat any safari camp in Tanzania or even Africa! Because of this, you need to know what style works best for you before you choose a place to stay. Prices will vary depending on how fancy you want to stay, but there are some great value lodges with deals that can be combined with some lodges in Ruaha to make the perfect Southern tour.
In Selous National Park, there are many places to stay. Here are a few of our favorites:
Beho Beho
What We Think The view from Beho Beho is one of the most beautiful in the Selous game reserve. It has all the comforts of home and more for its guests, and it looks out over a huge area of real wildness. The lodge is made up of 9 stone bandas, and each one has a view of the mountains. The lodge makes sure that its guests have every comfort possible. Food, guides, and service are all of the very best quality.
Siwandu
What We Think We believe that Siwandu is the best. It is in a great spot, has great guides, and has beautiful tents that offer all the comforts of home in a truly true way. It is tucked away among palm trees on the shore of Lake Nzerakera and has everything you could want for a safari vacation. It is our top choice for a tented camp in the Selous.
Roho ya Selous
What We Think One of the best camps in Nyerere National Park (which used to be called The Selous) is Roho ya Selous. This boutique, luxury tented camp is in a great spot with a view of the Nzerakera channel. It has great game watching and great guides. Can be done by itself or easily added to a trip to one of Asilia’s lovely Ruaha Camps, Usangu, or Jabali Ridge.
Sand Rivers Selous
Our View Sand Rivers is an exciting barefoot luxury lodge in a beautiful part of Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) that is full of wildlife. There are many great things about this camp in Tanzania, but this is our favorite. It’s great for people who want to have an adventure in the wild, with lots of walking safaris, great fly camping, and boating up to Steiglers Gorge. It is one of the oldest cabins and was built in the 1980s by Richard Bonham. It is thought to be one of the best places to be on the Rufiji River.
Very Serene Selous Camp
The camp is closed right now.
These rooms, which are decorated in a Victorian way, are a great deal for a luxury tented safari. This camp’s being owned by a bigger brand has really helped them. It lets them offer great service, luxury, and a great trip at a price that is usually associated with much smaller camps.
Azura Selous
Azura Selous is closed right now.
The lodge that used to be called Amara Selous is now called Azura Selous and is part of the luxury brand Azura. It is in the western part of the Selous and wasn’t known for its wildlife watching because it was a hunting block until 2005.
Since then, the number of animals has grown and the area has become famous for photography. When we stayed at the lodge, we thought the rooms were very nice. They had air conditioning, which was nice because this was one of the few camps in Selous that did. The rooms, which are made of stone and canvas, have views of the Ruaha River.
Tent Camp at Lake Manze
Our View Lake Manze is a great safari camp that is also very easy. It’s in a great spot right next to a beautiful lake, and you can hear groups of hippos swimming nearby. There is no power in the lodge, which gives it a rustic look. However, its comfort and charm give it an old-world feel that other camps can’t match. In terms of adventure and value for money, the camp is hard to beat. It’s not five stars, but it’s pretty close.
Maji Moto Selous
This camp is closed right now.
Maji Moto Selous is the sister camp to Kilimatonge in Ruaha. It is completely private and is set in the heart of the Selous Wilderness. It is a truly mobile camp that is great for safari-goers who want a wild and traditional experience.
Camp on the Mivumo River
What We Think This little gem is tucked away on the bank of the Rufiji River. It feels like an owner-run lodge. The hotel is part of the bigger Serena Hotel Chain, but they have worked hard to keep its charm and authenticity while adding the extra touches of luxury and great service that they are known for.
Selous Camp for Impala
What We Think The Impala Selous is right on the Rufiji River, which makes it a great place to see the people who live there. It’s not nearly as pricey as its most luxury rivals, but the service is almost as good. The raised tents are very comfortable, and two of them can be joined together to make a “family” tent. The camp is very nice, great for kids, and has the best of Nyerere National Park.
Camp at Rufiji River
On the cheap side, the Rufiji River Camp is one of the camps in the Selous. If you want to save money, we think you should go to Lake Manze Tented Camp instead. It will only cost you a little more, but you will have a much better time at the game park.
Selous River Valley
Selous Riverside Safari Camp is one of many camps outside the area, and it is thought to be one of the best. Still, the camp is not in the best place because you have to drive through a town for 15 to 20 minutes to get to the reserve entrance. The lodge is on the bank of the Rufiji River, but the view from the lodge across the river is of fields instead of bush. Staying inside the park is always the best way to get a real safari experience and quick access to the best places to see animals.
