Asilia Highlands, Tanzania

Asilia Highlands, Tanzania

Asilia Highlands, Tanzania. Asilia’s newest project, The Highlands, is a really intriguing one. The Ngorongoro area has been severely short in camps operated for true safari fans, and this fills that void. The fascinatingly distinctive design mixes in with the surrounding landscape, creating a sense of genuine luxury.

The Highlands of Asilia: A Guide

There is nothing quite like The Highlands. This brand new resort is situated on the outskirts of the mountain forest that surrounds the Olmoti Volcano, just north of the Ngorongoro Crater proper. The contemporary, luxury architecture complements Asilia’s more traditional approach to safari camps. This balance ensures that The Highlands will appeal to both luxury honeymooners and safari enthusiasts.

While The Highlands may readily serve as a base for exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, this is only a minor part of its attraction. Asilia purposefully located the camp away from the hustle and bustle of the main Crater rim, giving you almost exclusive access to the wilds of the Olmoti Volcano. You can follow old Maasai pathways to the summit of the Olmoti Crater and visit local settlements to learn about their culture and connection to environment.

Because of the range of activities available at The Highlands, three nights are recommended. With numerous trekking choices, one full day in the Crater, and excursions to the neighboring Maasai tribes, your time here will undoubtedly be worthwhile.

Why We Love Asilia Highlands, Tanzania

The design of Asilia’s The Highlands ‘pods’ is groundbreaking; the centered bed faces directly into a massive panorama, with the triangulated window design providing stunning vistas and keeping the space beautifully light during the day. The inside is incredibly stylish and simple, with clean-cut lines and hardwood floors. A huge divider divides the bedroom and the modern bathroom.

Despite being a relative newbie, everything points to The Highlands as the next big thing, and on our recent visits, we believe it lives up to the promise. It provides a truly diversified Ngorongoro experience that includes not just crater game drives, but also visits to local villages with whom they have a great relationship, as well as the breathtaking surrounding environment. If you can handle the difficult journey to get there, it is a very special place to escape your concerns for up to four nights.

As with all Asilia properties, the service, hospitality, and guiding are of the greatest quality, and you feel like a member of the family from the moment you arrive. The more you immerse yourself, the more meaningful your experience will be.

After a few nights at The Highlands, a flight into the Serengeti is essential. The time of year you travel determines where you go in the Serengeti, and combining The Highlands with another Asilia resort creates the ideal Northern Itinerary. Asilia owns a variety of camps in the National Park, including Kimondo and Ubuntu, which follow the herds from the Ndutu Plains to the Lamai Wedge, and permanent sites like as Sayari in Kogatende, Dunia in Seronera, and Namiri in the east.

When planning a safari in the Serengeti, one of the most important decisions you must make is which sort of camp will best fit you. There are significant variations between permanent lodges and movable campsites. The permanent lodges do not move during the year and feature more amenities, such as swimming and plunge pools. This makes them ideal for families with children who enjoy spending the middle of the day splashing around in cool water, but they are somewhat more expensive.

On the other side, mobile camps are what define the Serengeti. Permanent lodges can be found throughout Africa, but a camp that moves with the wildebeest migration is only found in Tanzania, and we adore them! Aside from being excellent value for money, their movements put you in the greatest position to observe the migration throughout the year. Mobile camps allow you to fully immerse yourself in nature and experience the unique ‘Out of Africa’ atmosphere that attracts so many people to East Africa.

If you’re not sure which camps are best for you, please contact one of our Tanzania specialists, who would be happy to discuss the various alternatives available and what bargains you can take advantage of.
