The lodge that used to be called Amara Selous is now called Azura Selous and is part of the luxury brand Azura. It is in the western part of the Selous and wasn’t known for its wildlife watching because it was a hunting block until 2005. Since then, the number of animals has grown and the area has become famous for photography. When we stayed at the lodge, we thought the rooms were very nice. They had air conditioning, which was nice because this was one of the few camps in Selous that did. The rooms, which are made of stone and canvas, have views of the Ruaha River.

What We Know About Azura Selous

The lodge is in the western part of the Selous Game Reserve. It’s not the best safari lodge for seeing wildlife compared to Lake Manze and the Siwandu area, but it’s become a great place to take pictures, and we’ve seen a lot more animals each time we’ve been there, so we expect that to keep getting better.

The lodge is on the Ruaha River, and each of the 13 large, luxury rooms made of stone and canvas has a view of the river and air conditioning. On a few levels, the main part of the lodge is built around the best infinity pool in the Selous. There is also a deck and restaurant with views of the riverbanks, where you can see hippos and crocodiles.

At Azura Selous, the main thing to do is go on game drives in open-air cars or on walking safaris. Selous Safaris does offer boating as a choice, but this depends a lot on the level of the river and isn’t always reliable. In the area, there is a camp to protect rhinos. This is a great place to stay for a Tanzania safari, even though rhino views are rare.
