The Greystoke Mahale

What We Think There is really nowhere else in Africa that is as good as Greystoke. The game viewing is also very different; you can go hiking in the Mahale Mountains to see chimpanzees. Lake Tanganyika is the second biggest lake in the world by volume and is very old. The main wooden building is right on the white sand beach, and the six bandas are tucked away along the edge of the bushes, but they have great views of the water. Even though it’s not cheap, you have to stay at this lodge if you’ve come all this way.

Tent Camp Nkungwe

We like Nkungwe, which is sometimes called Kungwe, better than the famous Mahale Greystoke camp in Mahale Mountain National Park, which is right next door. We like Nkungwe because it is simple, on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, and a good deal. Chimpanzees in the hills are the main draw at Mahale. Clients visit the same group of chimpanzees as Greystoke guests, but at different times. Once you get to the Mahale airstrip, you’ll need to take a boat down the lake to get to the lodge. Inside the national park, there are no roads or cars.
