A few lodges on the coast of Tanzania are great for people who want to get away from the crowds of Zanzibar and have a quiet time. People haven’t paid much attention to this area because of Zanzibar’s white beaches and rainbow-colored coral reefs. But as travelers look for more remote and real experiences, the mainland shoreline is starting to stand out. There is no better place to start or end your holiday than this place because it is so private.

People often forget about and don’t do as many water activities on the beaches north and south of Dar es Salaam. This means that there are fewer people visiting those places. There aren’t as many people who know about the cabins, and even during peak season, there aren’t nearly as many people there as there are in Zanzibar.

Divers aren’t allowed here, but if you want to mix old culture and history with your beach vacation, the coast of Tanzania has a lot to offer. Anyone interested in history can take tours and day trips that take them deep into the old Swahili culture and history. But have you ever been the only couple on a beach that goes on for miles in both directions? These beaches aren’t as “Instagram-worthy” as those in Zanzibar. The coast of Tanzania is a great place to visit if you haven’t already; it’s our little secret.

There are hotels along the coast of Tanzania that range in price and quality, so there is something for everyone. It’s easy to get to these hotels because they are close to Dar es Salaam. Being close to the beach makes it easy to go there if you don’t have much time but still want to take a break from your trip. If all of this sounds good to you, the west coast of Tanzania is the place for you. These are our favorite lodges:

Ras Kutani

Ras Kutani is now closed for good.
This is the height of “barefoot beach luxury,” and it’s a great deal too. It is out of the way, quiet, and stunningly beautiful. When you add in great rooms, delicious food, and friendly service, you have the best beach lodge ever.

The Waves

Tides is now closed for good.
This is a great little item that works well with some routes. It’s a great deal for the money and works well for all kinds of travelers, from couples to families. It is pretty far away from Zanzibar Island, which is growing all the time, because it is on the coast of the mainland. The Ras Kutani Lodge is cheaper, but the quality has gone down, which makes us think it should be our first choice for a trip to the mainland coast. You can have a much better time at Ras Kutani for a little more money, but the diving at Tides is much better than at Ras Kutani.

Island of Lazy Lagoon | Tanzania

The Fox family runs Lazy Lagoon. They also run a number of other camps in Tanzania very well. The company is great, and it’s clear that Lazy Lagoon has good morals. It’s easy to get to from Dar by car because it’s just south of Bagamoyo, and it’s a great deal. You can get the amazing world-class Ras Kutani beach lodge for a little more money, though. It’s one of the best beach hotels on that whole coast.

The Amani Beach Club

What We Think Amani Beach Club is on Tanzania’s main land coast, just south of Dar es Salaam, which is the country’s business city. This beach hotel on a hard-to-reach coast is a great deal. People who live outside of Dar es Salaam usually drive down here on the weekends to get away from the busy streets of Dar. Some of our favorite beach cabins in Tanzania is right down the beach from this hotel, so we don’t stay here very often. Even though it costs more, we think it’s worth it.
