Mchanga Beach Resort. The Mchanga Beach Lodge is a real gem, and the great little beach is still very much a secret. The lodge feels like it’s in a private area because it’s not near any of the big hotel sites that are on the coast, either up or down.

The cabin stays small and cozy because it only has a few rooms, which we think is perfect for a beach vacation! In Zanzibar, Mchanga Beach Lodge is on the northeastern coast. It’s about an hour’s drive from both the airport and Stone Town. From Dar es Salaam, it only takes 20 minutes to fly to Zanzibar.

Much thought went into making the main eating area and the beach bar comfortable and laid-back. A great spot to relax after a hike. In keeping with the beachy feel of the lodge, the bar is both large and cozy, with groups of soft armchairs that make it a great spot for a drink in the middle of the afternoon. We always hear good things about the food, which is a mix of African and European styles. The fresh seafood is especially good.

Thomas and Gloria’s many trips to Zanzibar over the years gave them the idea for the lodge. They noticed that there wasn’t a small, quiet resort with nice rooms and a laid-back vibe for a Tanzania vacation.

Each room at Sea View Lodge has its own bathroom and is large and airy thanks to shutters that can be used for different things, hand-made wooden louver doors, electric ceiling fans, air conditioning, and high ceilings with beams. There is a beautiful Zanzibari four-poster bed that was made by hand and is the main point of the room.

The bed linens are also very good. A traditional baraza sitting area with kanga-covered cushions makes the room feel bigger and more private. Six rooms have their own sand deck with a view of the sea that is covered in makuti trees and has two chairs and a table where coffee and tea are brought in the morning. There is less noise in the garden rooms, but there is no view of the sea.
