Mwiba River Lodge

Mwiba River Lodge

Mwiba River Lodge. The southern Serengeti was crying out for a premier permanent lodge, and now it has one. With an amazing setting above a rocky canyon and eight traditionally fashioned tented rooms, Mwiba is the answer for those looking for a sumptuous top luxury permanent lodge with all the amenities they could want.

With its own private concession, which is quite rare in East Africa, this area’s exclusive use offers for greater freedom in activities as well as a private and intimate safari away from the hordes that may be found in the National Park.

Legendary Mwiba Lodge – The Facts

Being in a private reserve on the outskirts of any park in Africa has advantages and disadvantages. On the obvious plus side, you have the entire region to yourself and can do whatever you want. The strict rules of the Serengeti do not apply, allowing the lodge to provide walking safaris and night drives. The disadvantage is that you are outside of the primary game viewing regions, but the movement brings wildlife with it, including a swarm of predators.

Even when the migration is not present, there is plenty of resident game, as highlighted by the BBC documentary Waterhole Africa’s Animal Oasis. Not only does the presentation highlight the range of large mammal species that make this area home, but it also demonstrates that even the smallest of critters are fascinating, which is why a walking safari is essential!

During the months when the migration is in the park’s southern part, some will penetrate the private concession, but it is the extras that make Mwiba stand out. From cultural tours to fly-camping, practically anything is imaginable.

The camp was created and built with relaxation in mind. Unlike many of its ostensibly high-end competitors, Mwiba does not overwhelm the senses with brilliant reds and greens. The tents are elegantly subtle, featuring a woody-beige color palette throughout. The stand-alone baths, each with a stunning outlook, are the centerpiece. Enormous glass panelled doors open out onto private hardwood decking, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the trees and beyond.

The main area is a huge wooden deck nestled between the lodge’s central stones. Despite being open-sided, the area is covered by a stunning Makuti thatched roof. The infinity pool stands right in front of this area and offers a similar view of the rocky gorge below.

The food is varied and good, as one would expect from a lodge of this quality and price, with an African and European flavor profile. We won’t spoil the surprise, but there are various dining options available at the resort and surrounding region. Perfect for a honeymoon!

Mwiba, which has been in operation for several years, is surely vying with some of the greatest in Tanzania and across Africa.
