Nkungwe Beach Lodge
Nkungwe Beach Lodge. We like Nkungwe, which is sometimes called Kungwe, better than the famous Mahale Greystoke camp in Mahale Mountain National Park, which is right next door. We like Nkungwe because it is simple, on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, and a good deal. Chimpanzees in the hills are the main draw at Mahale. Clients visit the same group of chimpanzees as Greystoke guests, but at different times. Once you get to the Mahale airstrip, you’ll need to take a boat down the lake to get to the lodge. Inside the national park, there are no roads or cars.
The Truth About Nkungwe Luxury Tented Camp
This lodge is in Mahale National Park in western Tanzania. The best way to get there is to take a special flight from Arusha every Tuesday and Thursday, which is set up by the lodge. You can also come here from Ruaha in the south of Tanzania. Your Tanzania tour will be even better if you visit both Mahale and Katavi at the same time. Katavi is another remote park in the southwest of Tanzania.
The lodge’s main area is set back from the beach on raised wooden decks. It has a big Makuti thatched roof that looks out over the lake. The lodge is clean, cozy, and doesn’t feel too fancy. The food is great, with lots of fresh fish from the lake.
On raised wooden platforms, the eight tent rooms are set back from the beach, just into the bushes. The tent rooms are very big and have their own bathrooms.
The main reason people come to Mahale is to see the chimpanzees in the hills covered in trees. You can do this every day and spend an hour with the chimps. It’s really an unbelievable event!
