Singita owns some of Africa’s finest and most opulent resorts, including the latest addition, Singita Mara Tented Camp, which opened in October 2012 on the Mara River’s banks. This is the best place to stay in the northern Serengeti, and it is great for the migration over the Mara River from July to November.

Singita Mara River Tented Camp: The Facts

The Singita Mara Tented Camp is located in the northern Serengeti and is easiest accessed by light aircraft on charter or scheduled flights from other regions in North Tanzania. The Lodge is located quite close to the Mara River and offers unobstructed views from all of the tents.

The lodge is placed atop platforms, providing spectacular views of the Mara River and the adjacent Serengeti landscape. Being a tented camp, as opposed to most other Singita properties, provides the Mara Camp a very intimate atmosphere and a distinct charm. It’s about as luxurious as a tented Serengeti Safari can be! If you want an extra-special honeymoon, this is it.

Singita Mara Tented Camp’s major activity is game driving in Singitas open-sided Land Rovers, although there are also walking safaris available. Although game watching is fantastic all year, the best time to visit is between July and October, when the Great Migration’s Wildebeest will be crossing the watery Gauntlet of the Great Mara River, on which the Camp is located. It’s one of the most breathtaking vistas in nature.

As with any Singita property, the level of care and hospitality is unparalleled; yet, due to the camp’s position within the National Park, the activities available are limited. That is why we advocate combining Singita Mara with another of their properties in the private Grumeti Concession.

While a normal Northern itinerary may only include a visit to one Serengeti camp, combining two camps over six or seven days provides an excellent experience. While Singita Mara focuses on the Great Migration, the other Singita sites provide night drives, horseback riding, and off-road driving, allowing you to follow wildlife in their natural habitat and get some fantastic picture possibilities.

Understanding the Wildebeest Great Migration is critical to having the Serengeti trip you’ve always wanted. From July to October, the migration takes place in the northern Serengeti, where they cross the famed Mara River and strive to avoid the hidden crocodiles and predators waiting on the banks.

From November to March, the herds concentrate in the Ndutu Plains in the park’s south, where 8,000 young are born per day during three weeks of intensive calving in February. Starting in April, the herds begin to migrate northward, into the Seronera and Grumeti regions until reaching in the Kogatende region by the beginning of July.

After an exhilarating safari at Singita, there are some excellent beach getaway options just a few hours away. From the island of Mnemba to Zanizbar’s high-end hotels, nothing beats drinking a refreshing drink on the beach after a safari.

The island of Zanzibar is numerous of hotels, but you must be cautious when deciding where to stay. Much of the island is tidal, thus the beaches are not always what one expects. The hotels Xanadu and White Sands have exquisite villas for honeymoons as well as larger villas for families with all of the amenities one could want.

However, the Zuri hotel has the nicest beach. It is a non-tidal area of the coast, so you may spend the entire day sunbathing on the sparkling white sand or splashing in the ocean. The numerous swimming pools and bars provide excellent entertainment throughout the day.
