Wayo Walking Camp
Wayo Walking Camp. As with all Wayo Camps, location is crucial. Wayo Walking Camp is a back-to-basics camp that offers tourists an exclusive safari experience reminiscent of a bygone era. The camp moves with its visitors every two days to experience areas of the Serengeti that are inaccessible and unexplored by other travelers. Expect to have one of the most immersive safari experiences in the midst of the Serengeti.
Wayo Walking Camp: The Facts
Given that the camp must be moved every other day, it’s no wonder that it’s ultra-lightweight and has a small environmental footprint. There are a maximum of seven dome tents, all with gauze roofs so that you can see the stars at night.
Bathrooms are shared by two tents, but because the camp is solely for customized, exclusive use, you will not be sharing them with any unpleasant neighbours. Unless the baboons decide to visit you!
During your stay at this camp, you will do very little driving, and exploring the Serengeti on foot is the norm. The guides (who are among the best in the business) only settle on routes and camp spots about one to two weeks before your departure date. This places the camp in an ideal location for wildlife viewing. It’s a throwback to the days when people could camp anywhere they wanted.
A normal day will begin with an early morning walk out of camp and return around lunchtime to relax throughout the hottest part of the day. The crew will have cooked a nice and hearty supper, and you can relax in the shade until the late afternoon hike begins. If the camp is relocating that day, the team will proceed, and you will arrive at your new camp site smoothly. It’s as if the camp had moved on its own!
